Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers are an integral component of fire prevention and the reduction of loss. The Alberta Fire Code provides requirements not only for how many fire extinguishers a commercial or industrial space must have but also the acceptable size of fire extinguishers, type fire extinguishers, placement of fire extinguishers, mounting height of fire extinguishers, signage marking regarding fire extinguishers … and the list goes on. Our Fire Safety technicians are certified to NFPA 10, the Standard for Hand Portable Fire Extinguishers and can provide you with advice about your fire extinguisher needs you can be confident in. Our team is prepared to meet the needs of our clients with as minimal interruption to business as possible. Our mobile fire extinguisher shop is outfitted to provide full service to almost any hand portable fire extinguisher ON SITE including 6 Year Maintenance and Hydrostatic Pressure Testing and we have extensive experience in both commercial and industrial environments. Our fire extinguisher service technicians inspect, clean, and certify your portable fire extinguishers annually, semiannually, or monthly depending on your needs.

Here are a few things you should know about fire extinguishers in a commercial or industrial setting:

  • Alberta Fire Code requires that all portable fire extinguishers be inspected and certified by a technician at a minimum of every twelve months.
  • This is usually the responsibility of the tenant of an occupied space.
  • Depending on the agent used as a fire suppressant, most fire extinguishers require an internal maintenance at a 1, 5, or 6 year intervals in order to remain certifiable.
  • No fire extinguisher can be mounted at a greater height than 5 feet to the top of the extinguisher according to the Alberta Fire Code.
  • NFPA 10, the Standard for Hand Portable Fire Extinguishers is a standard produced by the National Fire Protection Association and through an act of Parliament it becomes referred to in the Alberta Fire Code. The NFPA 10 is “the code” on fire extinguishers.

Fire Hoses

Fire Hoses and the standpipes they are attached to require an annual inspection similar to a fire extinguishers.  In addition, every three years fire hoses require a regular maintenance testing cycle including a hydro-static pressure test.  Our technicians can perform this testing on-site provided there is adequate space and a water supply available.  For smaller jobs or those without the required space, we can provide loaner hoses while we take yours back to our shop for testing.
