Emergency Lighting

Emergency & Exit Lighting

Having Emergency Lighting in a commercial and industrial occupancy is a requirement of the Alberta Fire Code, Building Code, & OH&S.  The requirements of Fire and Building code vary depending on the year of construction, but OH&S code applies to any occupied workplace.  There are two good rules of thumb to satisfy 99% of the code requirements:

  1. Mark your exits with an illuminated backlit exit sign.
  2. Provide an illuminated path of egress in the event of a power failure.

A functional(30 second) test should be performed monthly by the building owner or tenant.  Annual 3rd party testing is a requirement of OH&S and the Alberta Fire Code, to ensure that the unit will provide emergency lighting for the duration equal to the design criterion under simulated power failure conditions. This testing should be documented, and records maintained for at least two years.

  • Occupational Heath and Safety requires that all emergency lighting devices be inspected and tested at intervals of no less than 12 months by a third person party.
  • In most cases this is the responsibility of the tenant of an occupied space.
